Bear Mountain Workday

with NY State Parks
Saturday, May 18th, 2024
9:00am-3:00pm

Project Description: On July 9th, 2023 there was a historic rain storm that washed out 40 miles of trails. One of the affected trails is the Suffern-Bear Mountain trail which leaves Bear Mountain and continues to Suffern. The trail from Bear Mountain to the stream crossing (<1 mile of trail) was severely eroded leaving a large gully in the middle of the trail. With the help of the Trail Conference volunteers, the trail will be restored to its pre-storm condition. This project will include using ¾” stone and surfacing material to fill in washed out sections. This will be done by carrying 5 gallon buckets of stone and surfacing material.

When: May 18th and 19th from 9-3.

Where: We will meet in front of the Administration Building (across from the inn) at 9 am.

What to Bring: Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty: long pants, shirt with sleeves (short is okay), closed toed shoes, lunch and snacks, work gloves, at least 2 liters of water (no refill stations), rain gear, hat, sunscreen, bug spray, toilet paper/tissues

Other things to note: Public restrooms may not be available. Use the best LNT practices when using the woods: go 200 ft away from the trail/water source, choose rocks, carry out toilet paper, dig a cathole 6-8” deep and 4-6” wide.
